Aztecs
The Aztecs were a tribe of people that inhabited modern day Mexico and surrounding areas; they built enormous temples, worshiped many gods, and sacrificed people to the gods and many other things. The Aztecs died out around the 16th century, the same time the Spanish arrived. Did the Spanish kill the Aztecs or did they died out on their own accord?
The origins of the Aztecs are not confirmed, some believe that the Aztecs began as a hunter-gatherer tribe from a northern tribe, their name came from their homeland, Aztlan (white land). They were also known as the Tenocha (similar to their capital city, Tenochtitlan) or the Mexica (the name of the country and the original name of the city that replaced Tenochtitlan)The Aztecs appeared soon after the downfall of the Mesoamerican civilization (the Toltec).
The Aztecs built a settlement near the southwest border of Lake Texcoco, when they saw an eagle perched on a cactus on the marsh land they took it as a sign to start building. They drained the swamp land, built artificial islands which were used to build the foundations of their capital city, plant crops like maize (corn), beans, squashes, potatoes, tomatoes and avocados. They also hunted local animals, rabbits, armadillos, snakes, coyotes and wild turkey for food. The Aztecs had irrigation methods for the crops and a powerful military tradition which would enable the Aztecs to build a state and later an empire.
